Motorists are being warned to plan journeys as a major link at the busy Crewe Green roundabout closes today for THREE months.
The link between Crewe Green Roundabout and Hungerford Road and Sydney Road will be closed to allow highway improvement works.
It marks the start of phase two of the Crewe Green Roundabout scheme and will see signposted diversions in place from today (April 18).
A single lane of traffic will be maintained under traffic light control between Hungerford Road and Sydney Road.
Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times.
Cheshire East Council says the 12-week closure will allow for the construction of the northern section of the new roundabout layout.
During phase two, the existing traffic lights on Crewe Green Roundabout will be switched off and new toucan crossings turned on.
Cllr Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways, said: “We appreciate there will be disruption to people’s journeys while this important stage of the roundabout scheme takes place and I’d like to thank motorists for their patience as works continue.
“The scheme is progressing well and once fully open later this year, the new roundabout will ease congestion and remove a traffic pinch-point which has frustrated motorists for many years.”
Highways bosses have publicised a long diversion route (see below) which would take drivers right around the north side of the town and past Leighton Hospital, adding several miles and around 30-40 minutes to journey times at busy times.
More information about the Crewe Green Roundabout scheme can be found on the major projects pages of Cheshire East Council.
I have reservations on the complete removal of traffic lights when the new system is open in November. Time will tell. I only hope we dont have to go through another 3 months later on while they are reinstalled???
