Woore CC 1sts skipper Tas Hussain used his experience in his side’s thrilling win over Meir Heath to maintain their run in a rain interrupted match, writes Roger Horwood.
With five straight wins under their belt, and maximum points in each, the surge towards promotion shows no sign of abating.
The club remain in second 22 points behind Bagnall Norton and 59 points ahead of third-placed Sandyford.
With only one over left, Craig Ruscoe demolished the stumps to end Meir Heath’s resistance in a match where both teams were far from at full strength.
Batting first after winning the toss, Woore lost opener Ruscoe LBW for only 3, but Harry Oliver (58) and Hassan Ul Qasim Haleem (44) shared a stand of 83.
Woore were set fair for a challenging total despite a couple of short rain interruptions.
Professional Dissanage Eranga Thilna Rathanayake (“Rangi”) pressed the accelerator button and with one eye on the weather hit a rapid 52 not out.
He shared an unbroken stand of 42 with the veteran Julian Mitchell (11 not out) who had been drafted in from Woore’s 3rd team at the last minute.
With 187-4 on the board, Woore skipper declared on 46 overs, giving his side just under three hours to gain another win.
Meir Heath lost their first two wickets for only 4 runs.
Dale Heath (23), Austen Crump (33) and Steve Adnams (35) kept them in the game until the final few overs.
But once again the visitors’ main bowlers did the damage as the skipper constantly switched with shrewd changes which ensured the batsmen got no respite.
Ruscoe (3-29 off 11.5 overs) Hussain (3-44 off 17 overs) and “Rangi” (3-34 off 12 overs) proved too much for the hosts who were all out for 155.
Woore 2nds narrowly lost at home by one wicket to Moddershall and Oulton’s 5th team, but are still in with an outside chance of promotion.
Having been put in, Woore struggled to 110 all out off 44 overs with Abbas Muktar (32), Andy Kenvyn (23) and young Matthew Kenvyn (15) the only batsmen to reach double figures.
The visitors’ wickets were shared around with Dean Tooth (3-41 off 14 overs) and Matt Jackson (3-27 off 10 overs) proving difficult to score off.
Tim Twigg (31) and James Mason (23) helped ensure an away win despite Andy Kenvyn’s 3-28 off 14 overs and youngster Tom Saji’s 3-8 off only 3.5 overs.
Next Saturday, Woore 1sts are at home to Bignall End (12.30pm start) and Woore 2nds visit Porthill Park 3rds (1pm).
