A stunning visual display of hundreds of donated knitted and wooden poppies is on display at St Mary’s Church in Acton as part of Remembrance, writes Jonathan White.
The knitted poppies were made by members of the Haughton and Faddiley WI and the wooden poppies were made by church members Charles Hull and James Stott.
The display will remain in situ until the end of November.
A brief act of remembrance was led by Revd Anne Lawson on Remembrance Sunday by the War Memorial and surrounded by the Poppy displays.
A representative from St Mary’s Church, Acton said: “In these unprecedented times, we are grateful for this thought-provoking visual tribute – which serves to remember those who gave up so much for us.”
Remembrance Services were held in private this year to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day, the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and 70 years since the start of the Korean War.
If government Covid-19 guidelines allow, the Church plans to hold a socially distanced ‘Follow the Star’ walk to Dorfold Hall Park in Acton on Sunday December 20.
And they will return to see the outdoor ‘Nativity Scene’ in the churchyard with carol music playing.
