A war of words has emerged after an Cheshire East Independent councillor says she is “recruiting candidates” for the authority’s next election in 2023.
Cllr Suzie Akers Smith, the borough’s cycling and walking champion, claims she is “starting so early” with her election preparations following a farcical debate over 20mph speed restrictions last month.
A petition has been launched to back a campaign for 20mph speed limits on most residential streets in Nantwich and other towns and villages across Cheshire East.
The petition, set up by sustainability action group Macctastic in Macclesfield, is being run on behalf of Cheshire East Climate Alliance.

Cheshire East Council insists it has no immediate intention of introducing mandatory 20mph speed limits despite renewed calls to boost road safety.
National campaign group 20 is Plenty – which has local branches in Nantwich, Crewe, Congleton, Sandbach, Wilmslow and Bollington – is again urging the council to lower the speed limit in built-up areas.
A Nantwich councillor has welcomed the introduction of a 20mph speed zone around Malbank School and Sixth Form College.
Cllr Arthur Moran said the new speed zones were long overdue – and now is pressing for double yellow lines to cure parking chaos there.
