Cheshire East Council will not be introducing weekly food waste collections until the autumn.

This also means the council’s plans to change black bin collections from fortnightly to three-weekly will be delayed until the same time

Residents are being urged to have their say on plans for weekly food waste collections across Cheshire East – and to reduce black bin collections to every three weeks.

The collections are part of the “Simpler Recycling Scheme” legislation announced by the Government in October 2023.

Cheshire East Council says collecting black bins every three weeks instead of fortnightly may be the only way it can meet future legal requirements for weekly food waste pick-ups.

Tom Shuttleworth, interim director of environment and neighbourhoods, told councillors it didn’t look as if the funding being offered to implement the new weekly food waste collection scheme in 2026, would cover the council’s costs.

Food waste from Cheshire East households will have to go in black bins from January amid plans to charge residents for garden waste recycling, admits the council.

Food recycling will formally stop next year in Cheshire East as legally authorities are not allowed to charge to collect food waste.
