Fire chiefs have launched an investigation into a major blaze at a turkey farm in Nantwich as the company today confirmed 3,000 birds died in the incident.

Crews remained on site this morning after battling the fire throughout the night in one of the farm’s barns at Alvaston Hall, on Peach Lane.

The fire started at around 4pm yesterday (April 19th) and at its height there were nine fire engines in attendance from across Cheshire and Staffordshire.

A spokesperson for Aviagen Turkeys, based in Tattenhall near Chester, said it was grateful for the swift response of the fire service and confirmed that it “sadly led to the loss of around 3,000 birds”.

They added: “We are grateful for the swift response of the fire service and are working closely with customers to implement our contingency measures, which are in place for just such an eventuality.”

The barn measured approximately 60m by 25m was significantly damaged.

The fire has been surrounded and crews are using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and main jets to fight the fire.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Sadly, a number of turkeys have perished within the affected barn.

“Crews remained on scene overnight and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.

“Crews are still on scene, supported by relief crews, and have been using the high-reach extending turret and hose reels to dampen down hotspots identified with a thermal imaging camera.”

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles around as it billowed across Middlewich Road towards Wistaston and Nantwich.
