Blyth FA Cup - Nantwich Town's Weaver Stadium, pre-season games, community football

Nantwich Town tumbled out of the Doodson Sport Cup on penalties to lower league opposition in Newcastle Town.

In front of just 100 supporters, the Dabbers suffered from the spot – both in normal time and after extra time.

In a dull and dour match which did little to cheer the paltry crowd on a cold night, all the action happened from the 85th minute onwards.

Newcastle, mid-table in the Evo-Stik First Division South, took the lead with a penalty from Anthony Malbon five minutes from normal time.

But Nantwich stalwart striker Michael Lennon hit back in the 89th minute, taking the game to extra time.

Malbon, though, notched a second spot-kick in the 104th minute which looked to have sealed victory.

But Lennon’s never-say-die attitude earned him a second equaliser eight minutes from the end of the extra period.

The hosts held their nerve, though, and clinched victory on penalties with Sean Cooke and Aleksandr Solovjovs missing for Nantwich.

Although disappointing, privately the Dabbers management won’t be too disappointed to exit with their focus now firmly on pushing for the play-offs in the league.
