Nantwich youngsters did their schools proud at the South Cheshire sportshall athletics finals.

Teams from Pear Tree Primary in Stapeley,  Weaver Primary, and Sound Primary took part in the finals at South Cheshire College.

Brine Leas School and Malbank School took part in the high schools finals.

They went head-to-head with Crewe schools competing in indoor activities such as relay races, hurdles, the long jump, the high-jump and shot putt.

College students officiated at the  finals, organised by the Crewe and Nantwich School Sport Partnership (CNSSP).

It follows a series of heats in November and earlier this month. Heat winners and runners up made it through to the finals.

The three Nantwich primary schools competed against Monks Coppenhall Primary School, Vine Tree Primary and eventual winners Leighton Primary School.

Leighton now progress to the Cheshire county final at Chester’s Northgate Arena on March 1.

Malbank and Brine Leas Years 7 and 8 pupils competing against Sir William Stanier High School, St Thomas More High School, and King’s Grove High School.

Brine Leas celebrated success in three out of four competitions, winning the Year 7 Boys, Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls events while King’s Grove High School scooped first place in the Year 7 Girls competition.

Brine Leas now go on to compete in the high school county final at the Northgate Arena on March 8.

CNSSP aims to increase PE and sport opportunities for young people through co-ordinated PE, school sport and out-of-school-hours learning activities with local clubs, community sports facilities and development programmes.

Niall McGregor, school games organiser, said: “The sportshall athletics events are something all pupils and staff look forward to and this year’s finals were a big success once again.

“I’d like to thank South Cheshire College for hosting the finals and students for their help in running the events.”
