Dangerous Obsession, Crewe Lyceum

By Claire Faulkner
“Dangerous Obsession” is one of those plays which you wish you’d written yourself.

It’s a modern suspense thriller with amazing twists and turns throughout.

Presented by talking Scarlet and directed by Patric Kearns, the play is a must see at Crewe Lyceum this week.

The suspense builds gradually, giving the audience time to reflect on the characters and their roles in the story.

George Telfer plays ‘John Barrett’ with incredible expertise. He portrays the unemotional ‘John’ perfectly, revealing the character’s state of mind as he slowly unravels during the first act.

John has come to visit married couple Sally and Mark Driscoll, a couple it seems, who have everything.

As the play develops the audience becomes aware of  John’s obsession with the couple and the imminent danger they appear to be in.

Anna Brecon as ‘Sally’ gives a wonderful performance with complete style and grace.

Cast opposite as ‘Mark’ was Ben Roddy, who skilfully made the character his own.

The play also deals with the complex relationships between husband and wife, which leads us to a darker side of human nature we normally don’t want to see in a marriage.

If you enjoy suspense and thrillers, then this is the play for you.

Due to the expertise of the production, there were moments when I heard the entire audience in the theatre gasp.

The acting certainly didn’t disappoint, and ‘Dangerous Obsession’ is a play I will remember for a long time.
