Leighton Hospital’s new-look labour ward has welcomed its first babies after a six-month refurbishment.

Noah Webb was the first arrival at 5.41pm, followed a few hours later by Izabella Thorley at 8.37pm.

The upgrade has seen a new purpose-built midwife-led unit attached to the main ward to provide care for low-risk pregnancies.

Facilities include a birthing pool in midwifery-led rooms and mood lighting to create a calm and relaxing birth environment.

Katie said: “Not only are the facilities great, but the midwives were supportive and fantastic for both of us.”

The ward also has a new high dependency area for women who require more specialised care during labour.

Kristie Vernon, supported by her partner Simon Thorley, gave birth to Izabella in this section.

Kristie said: “We were really happy with everything. The staff were brilliant, and we couldn’t fault them at all.”

Andy Langley, matron for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s (MCHFT) maternity unit, added: “We have focussed not only on providing the highest possible quality and safety of patient care, but also on choice and comfort available to our patients.”

Pam Cornwall, head of midwifery at MCHFT, said: “I am delighted our new Labour Ward is now open, ready to be enjoyed by pregnant women and their families, as well as by the staff providing their care.

“This is the latest phase of our maternity service modernisation to be completed, and the results are amazing.”
