Millfields School East African link

Teachers from a Nantwich school will be swapping Cheshire for East Africa to take part in an international twinning scheme.

Millfields Primary and Nursery earned a place on the Connecting Classrooms initiative for its commitment to teaching students about global issues.

The Marsh Lane school has been twinned with Lions Hill Primary, near Nakuru town in Kenya, through the scheme which was set up by the UK government and the British Council.

Millfields headteacher Andrew Ross and international school coordinator Victoria Higgins will take part in an exchange visit to Lions Hill Primary to focus on the way mathematics is taught.

The idea is to develop teaching methods to improve achievement across both schools.

Mr Ross said: “We are delighted to be linked with Lions Hill Primary as we feel it will offer our pupils the chance to experience a culture completely different to their own.

“We’ve already planned a range of global partnership projects and we’re looking forward to visits to and from Kenya to strengthen that partnership.”

Ms Higgins said: “Both staff and pupils are very excited. The children will learn to empathise with and value other people’s lifestyle and culture.”

Thrilled Year 6 pupil Ethan Moulson added: “I like being partnered with Kenya because we get to do fun connecting days, like when they came here.

“I wrote a letter to my penpal and I told them everything we do at home and school. I will learn what they do at their school and how it works. I think it will be different.”

Justine Greening, Secretary of State for International Development, said: “I am very pleased Millfields Primary is taking on this excellent opportunity to link with schools in other parts of our world.”

Lions Hill Primary has over 1,000 pupils, four times more than Millfields which has 248 pupils on role and caters for children aged three to 11.
