Harry Clayton, scored in pre-season against Leek Town

By James Briscoe
Harry Clayton’s control and finish just before half-time was a rare moment to remember for Nantwich Town fans away at Matlock Town.

The hosts looked better in open play in the first ten minutes however Nantwich had several chances from corners.

Aaron Burns shimmied past a defender in the Matlock area but his right-footed shot was blocked on 7 minutes.

Nantwich keeper Luke Simpson kept Matlock out on 12 minutes with a smothering save.

Matlock’s Darrell Thomas and Lavelle White linked up well and their pace was a threat to Earl Davis and Russell Courtney early in the first half.

Danny Holland had a weak shot saved by Simpson on 15 minutes as the home side got on top.

And the opener came from a corner when Oscar Harcourt scored from close range after Nantwich’s Luke Simpson could only parry on 17 minutes.

Davis nearly equalised from another Carden corner but his header flew just over on 19 minutes.

Matlock somehow cleared when it looked like someone in green must put the ball in to the net from an in-swinging Max Harrop corner on 22 minutes.

Burns attacked the back post when Harrop’s corner swung in but he couldn’t get a touch with Jon Kennedy in no man’s land on 28 minutes.

White and Thomas linked up again with White forcing a good save from Simpson on 36 minutes.

Harry Clayton then leveled when he smashed the ball in past Kennedy after a brilliant chest down which left David Haggerty for dead on 41 minutes.

Simpson then made a reflex stop from a Corey Gregory free-kick just before the break.

On 65 minutes, Gregory’s free-kick from around 35 yards out curled all the way in to the corner of Simpson’s net to make it 2-1.

Burns almost set up Chris Amadi for an equaliser on 74 minutes, and Carden’s whipped cross to the back post was headed wide by Amadi on 90 minutes.

Nantwich: Simpson, Frost, Courtney (Egerton-Wilson 45), Caldecott, Davis, Moore, Carden, Jones, Harrop, Clayton (Amadi 71), Burns. Subs: Young, A White, Devenney
