Danny Johnson, Nantwich Town boss Oct 2013

Nantwich Town boss Danny Johnson launched a scathing attack on his players after they were knocked out of the FA Trophy.

The Dabbers were soundly beaten 2-0 away at local rivals Northwich Victoria.

Johnson apologised to Nantwich supporters who made the journey to Flixton to watch the game.

“I am bitterly disappointed we let our supporters down, you deserved better than what we served up.

“The manner in which we conceded the two goals was nothing short of a disgrace and totally unacceptable.

“I got a couple of things wrong today and will learn from my mistakes, I only hope the players learn from theirs.

“We will be back at it on Tuesday and quickly put today’s very poor performance behind us. Thank you all for your support.”

Nantwich were second best for most of this third round qualifying clash at a freezing Valley Road Stadium.

Mark Jones was unlucky not to score with a speculative effort on seven minutes which spun off a Northwich defender and nearly caught out the Vics keeper Tim Deasy.

Dabbers striker Steve Foster headed over on 17 minutes after good wing play between Max Harrop and Aaron Burns.

Vics captain Danny Wisdom missed a point-blank header with the goal gaping on 32 minutes in a good period of play for the home side.

Oliver Devenney was unlucky not to put The Dabbers ahead on 36 minutes with a swerving left-footed drive wide.

The hosts went 1-0 up on 40 minutes after Nantwich debutant Adam Jones diverted the rebound from Joe Garvin’s shot into his own net.

Gary Burnett then capitalised on a mix-up between Alex Frost and Jack Cudworth, winning the ball before the keeper could gather and was rewarded with the an open net on 54 minutes for the second.

Alex Taylor nearly extended Northwich’s lead on 62 minutes when he headed Danny Boyle’s cross narrowly wide of the upright.

Boyle should have made it 3-0 but his penalty was well saved by Cudworth on 71 minutes.

The Dabbers throughout struggled to cope with the movement of Northwich’s front line and showed little attacking threat.
