Operation Elderflower by Nantwich Police

Assaults across Nantwich and Crewe have fallen by almost 12%, according to the latest statistics just released.

But burglary in the Eastern Cheshire area is on the rise, going up 5%, the figures show.

The National Crime Statistics, which measured different types of crime rates between October 1 2012 to September 30 2013, show that crime overall for Cheshire Police eastern area fell by 1.2%.

There were 17,588 crimes including fraud recorded in the area between October 2012 and September 2013.

That’s a drop from 17,796 on the previous 12 months.

Eastern Cheshire covers Nantwich and Crewe as well as Alsager, Middlewich, Sandbach, Congleton, Holmes Chapel and Knutsford.

Chief Inspector Chris Ankers, crime manager for Eastern BCU, said the challenge was to tackle the rise in burglary.

“This type of crime has a huge impact on the victim and we really want to prevent that,” he said.

“We have seen a change in this type of crime in that a large proportion of our burglaries are being committed by criminals travelling in from across the borders.

“They are targeting houses where it is clear that no one is home (no lights on particularly during twilight hours over the autumn/winter months) and entry being gained through unlocked rear doors.

“We have changed and are developing the way we target these offenders.

“We continue to develop ways in which we can prevent this from happening, and if that fails, the best way to capture the offenders.”

Residents should lock windows and doors, even when in the house.

A large number of offences are committed by offenders sneaking in through unlocked back doors stealing something close by and leaving through the same door.

If out, make sure there is a timed lighting device to come on during twilight hours, or leave a radio on.

If you know who is committing such crimes, tell the police anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or on-line at www.crimestoppers.uk.org, or social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
