Aaron Burns, Nantwich Town

By Jamaes Briscoe
A brace from Aaron Burns inspired a fightback but was not enough to salvage a point for Nantwich Town at Witton Albion.

The Dabbers were 3-0 after an hour but came close to rescuing the game.

Former Manchester United trainee Burns (pictured) took his season’s tally to 22 with two strikes in 10 second-half minutes.

But Danny Johnson’s men were unable to fashion a late equaliser to secure a point merited by their second half endeavours.

Nantwich were ultimately unable to recover from a poor first half.

They were trailing as earlier as the 14th minute when a ball nicked off Harry Clayton and Witton’s Alex Titchiner capitalised by curling a wonder goal past Steve James.

And on 33 minutes, they were 2-0 down.

The Dabbers failed to clear their lines and Titchiner was on hand to smash the ball past James.

Mat Bailey’s header from Oliver Devenney’s free kick forced a save from the Witton keeper, which was one of Nantwich’s best attempts in the first period.

But on the hour mark, Witton put the game to bed. Titchiner turned provider and former Dabber Josh Hancock headed home the hosts’ third.

Just a minute later, Burns gave Nantwich hope when he tapped in from close range after keeper Matthew Cooper parried ball into Foster’s path.

Johnson made some substitutions in a bid to press for more goals, and on 73 minutes a slick ball from Bailey found Burns who slotted calmly past Cooper.

More pressure followed but they were unable to find a way past Cooper for a leveller.

It’s a disappointing second defeat on the spin for Nantwich, who now sit 14th in the Evo Stik Premier League with little hope of making the play offs 13 points adrift.
