Crewe & Nantwich MP Connor Naismith has welcomed new support for the area’s pubs and clubs after new Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a cut in business rates.
Local hostelries will see business drop from 20% to 0% from next year under a raft of new policies announced by Mr Burnham.
But the cuts will not help other hospitality venues like restaurants and cafes which are calling for a cut in VAT from 20% to 10% to stave off more closures.
Kelly Woodnutt, who runs St Martha and Edward’s in Nantwich, recently organised a meeting with Mr Naismith (pictured) and dozens of hospitality bosses in the town to highlight their concerns and step up the VAT cut campaign.
Kelly told Nantwich News: “Whilst I am happy to see some relief for pubs, clubs and live music venues with this cut in business rates, it does not extend to food led businesses such as cafes and restaurants.
“This is a positive start for our industry, which we hope will pave the way for further support by way of the VAT cut we have been campaigning for and that Burnham has previously shown support toward.”
Mr Naismith said: “Pubs, clubs and live music venues are at the heart of our communities.
“They are places where people come together, where local talent is discovered and memories are made.
“For too long these businesses have faced mounting costs while working incredibly hard to keep their doors open.
“Andy Burnham’s decision to reduce Business Rates from 20% to 0% is a bold intervention that recognises the importance of the hospitality and nightlife sector.
“I welcome this first step to protect jobs, support local economies and give venues the confidence to invest in their future.
“It also has the potential to make nights out more affordable for customers at a time when many families are still feeling the pressure of higher living costs.
“In Crewe and Nantwich, we are fortunate to have fantastic pubs, clubs and live music venues that contribute enormously to our local identity.
“I’ve been clear that businesses across the sector – specifically our local independents – need government support.”
The announcement does not help other venues like restaurants and coffee shops, who have spearheaded the local campaign on VAT cuts.
Mr Naismith added: “I know some business owners won’t be impacted by today’s decision, but this is only the start of Andy’s place-based government.
“I’ll keep pushing to make sure their voices are heard.”
