The governing body at a Nantwich primary school is one of only six in Cheshire East to achieve a national award.

Millfields Primary School and Nursery has been awarded the Governor Mark – a national Governors Association quality standard.

It follows a rigorous examination of the Marsh Lane school where assessors praised the high quality of governance.

They said: “The governing body makes a significant contribution to the work and direction of the school.”

They also highlighted the expertise on the governing body and the effective recruitment process to ensure the level of skill is maintained.

Chair of governors Robert Graham said: “The school has Ofsted inspections and the children are tested so we thought it only right governors should be scrutinized too.

“We wanted to know, and everyone to do with the school should know, that our performance is good and effective, achieving Governor Mark has helped us to confirm that.

“This is recognition of the whole school community’s hard work and commitment to all the children at Millfields.”

Millfields headteacher Andrew Ross said: “We’re very much a team.

“The governors have been hugely supportive in helping me raise the teaching standards and the ethos in the school.

“We work together to make sure the children are challenged but also to make them feel safe and know that they can make mistakes within a safe environment.

“Our children are happy and grounded and well-prepared for high school. They settle well when they move up to year seven.”

Two governors Jill Taylor and Lisa Tonge also play a key role in the community, running Cubs and Beavers at the school.

A revamped school hall hosts community events such as karate, kick boxing, Pilates and Zumba.
