CANTA visit of 15 language students

Crewe and Nantwich Twinning Association (CANTA) have celebrated an English language summer school for residents from friendship towns in Europe.

Fifteen students from Bischofsheim in Germany, Lecco in Italy, and Alcazar de San Juan in Spain, enjoyed the hot South Cheshire weather as they came to improve their conversational English.

Formal lessons were held in the morning, with cultural visits in the afternoon to venues in Nantwich and Crewe.

They also travelled further afield to the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Stoke-on-Trent, Liverpool and Chester.

Students and CANTA members also enjoyed English social gatherings such as barbecues, carvery meals and a skittles evening with pints of traditional English ale.

Nadja Gaudron, 35, from Bischofsheim, came to the summer school with her sister, Beate Engel, 36, and brother in law Reiner Zerjeski, 46.

She said: “This is the first time I have been to the summer school and I have very much enjoyed it.

“I loved wandering around Nantwich which I have heard so much of and the skittles was wunderbar!”

Ramon de La Guia, 46, was equally enthusiastic. He said: “I hope I can come back next year. I have made many English friends and I think my English is better.”

The students fund their travelling accommodation costs, but CANTA facilitates cultural and social events.

Twinning was started in 1957 with the aim of promoting and fostering friendship and understanding between Crewe and Nantwich residents and those of other nations.

Cheshire East and Nantwich Town Cllr David Marren, a member of CANTA, said: “I think that purpose is just as important today as it ever was, perhaps even more so.

“I would encourage others to think about membership.

“The joining fee is just £10 for the year or £20 for a family of four, and the experiences and interactions are fantastic.”

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council passed over the promotion of twinning to volunteers in 2003, which was when CANTA was formed.
