train hit person - Arriva Trains Wales - Nantwich railway station sign

A woman has been killed after being hit by a train on the line between Nantwich and Wrenbury.

The incident happened on the Shrewsbury to Crewe line close to Sound Lane, British Transport Police have confirmed.

All Arriva Trains Wales services on that line were suspended because of the incident, with replacement bus services between the two towns in operation.

The incident happened at about  8.45am today (July 29) and involved the 5.40am service from Cardiff to Manchester.

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said there were about 80 passengers on board the train at the time.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “We were called to the line close to Sound Lane in Nantwich, Cheshire on Tuesday, 29 July after a report that a woman had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Cheshire Constabulary attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 8.24am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Medics from North West Ambulance Service also attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are currently working to identify the deceased and officers will assist in the compilation of a report for the coroner.”

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said the train was eventually allowed to continue to Nantwich where shocked passengers and crew disembarked.

“The security and safety of our passengers is our first concern in an incident like this,” he added.

“Emergency services are on site and we are letting people know via our website and social media the latest. There are diversions set up via Chester and replacement buses.”

Network Rail is now tweeting that the section of line affected is now open again and train services should resume shortly.
