The Cat FM community radio team

Crewe & Nantwich radio station The Cat is switching its base from Nantwich to a new home at South Cheshire College.

The station, preparing to launch on FM in 2015, will take up residence in the college’s media department before Christmas.

The partnership has been described by both parties as a “win-win scenario” for the station and the college.

The Cat will use the college’s state-of-the-art studio for daily broadcasts and office space for administration and off air tasks, while broadcasting opportunities will open up for students at the college.

The station was granted a five-year FM licence by Ofcom earlier this year – the first radio station in Crewe and Nantwich to receive one.

Chris Radford, Chairman of The Cat, said he is thrilled with the new partnership and is looking forward to working in the new college home.

“Working within the fantastic college campus will be a huge boost to us as we switch to FM, giving us access to a great studio and more spacious facilities.

“This will enable us to enhance the broadcasting service we provide to the wider public and open up many more opportunities for us in the months and years ahead.

“We are also keen to get many students involved in radio projects and broadcasts and there will be lots of opportunities within the station that they can tap into.”

BTEC media student Lucy Alcock, 18, said: “My dream is to have my own radio show and now, with The Cat coming to South Cheshire College, it’s my opportunity to gain real life radio experience.”

Jasbir Dhesi, South Cheshire College Principal, added: “The Cat is an expanding radio station with an exciting future ahead and we are looking forward to being a part of that success.

“It will also be great to have the station based here because our students can benefit from valuable radio experience and work placement opportunities.”

The Cat has been based at a smaller studio at Frederick House off Beam Heath Way, Nantwich, for several years.
