Nantwich in Bloom winners

Nantwich has scooped a prestigious Gold award at the North West in Bloom presentation day.

And it also won an additional award for its floral bed next to Nantwich Library on Beam Street.

The bed was designed by ANSA (Cheshire East Council’s environmental services company) to commemorate 50 years of Britain in Bloom.

Members of Nantwich in Bloom and Mark Hulme, from ANSA, were in attendance to collect the awards in Southport on Friday (October 24).

A spokesman for Nantwich in Bloom paid tribute to volunteers, in particular the Nantwich Litter Group led by Joyce Webb, and the Nantwich in Bloom helpers who pitch in with planting and weeding.

Cllr Christine Farrall, Mayor of Nantwich Town Council, said: “Once again Nantwich in Bloom has done a fantastic job in the town over the summer months and helped to make Nantwich an attractive place to visit and shop.

“The town council is very grateful for all the effort put in by the volunteers.”

A special award was given to Doug and Penny Butterill for their outstanding contribution to North West in Bloom.

The Mayor added: “Many congratulations to Doug and Penny. This award is well deserved and a recognition of their valuable work over many years.”

Meanwhile, Willaston won a Silver Gilt Award in the Britain in Bloom awards for the third year running, and a special Commemoration Award for the village’s tribute to World War One.

Cllr Brian Silvester, of Willaston and Rope, said: “Residents of Willaston owe a huge debt of gratitude to the small bunch of volunteers who made these awards possible.

“Ably led by parish councillors Wayne Lewis and John Flackett, they devote endless hours of their time to improve the village and make it more beautiful.”

  1. Have we seen you out with the volunteer litter pickers recently, Mrs T.? Or watering any hanging baskets? Or doing anything positive for the town? No? Thought not.

I have lived here for thirty years, and over the last few years the town has never looked so good. I myself am a litter picker, not with a group, but just myself and husband in the last 12 months we have picked over 100 sacks, think perhaps you could try it yourseff, and be as proud to live here as we do!! Nowt gets done without people actually getting out there, and lots do!!

    • Margaret. Thank you for your efforts. I can’t claim anything similar, but I will routinely pick a couple of pieces of litter when I’m around town. If everybody did that, the town would look better, and we would encourage some pride in Nantwich; surely one of the best towns for miles around?
