cartoon workshops by Mark Wilcox run at Nantwich Museum

A new monthly Cartoon Academy has been launched at Nantwich Museum, writes Kirsty Rollings.

Mayor of Nantwich Town Council Cllr Christine Farrall was on hand to officially launch the new workshops.

A dozen children gathered at the museum on Pillory Street to pick up cartoon character tips from Nantwich-based cartoonist Mark Wilcox, before sketching their own designs.

Cllr Farrall joined the creativity, circulating and speaking to children and their parents about their developing fictional characters.

The success of Mark’s initial Cartoon Academy sessions at various venues sparked the idea for additional sessions for 12-18 year olds and adult lessons.

Emphasis on the importance of ‘the eyes’, in portraying a character’s emotions, sparked laughter among the children when Mark combined ‘angry’ eyes with a comedy smile.

Mark said: “Everybody loves cartoons!

“The viewer finds them to be great fun, they are great fun, and for the artist they are a fantastic form of expression.

“We’ve had some remarkable feedback from parents whose children have been initially reluctant to draw, but who now spend their free time creating their own fantastic characters.”

Cllr Farrall said: “The Cartoon Academy is a great thing to support, as it’s giving the young people of Nantwich a chance to be creative.

“I’m always in support of encouraging children to practise their finer skills, especially in this fun setting.”

The next workshop is to be held on Saturday April 25 at 2pm, entitled ‘Learn to Draw The Minions from Despicable Me’.

This first workshop is aimed at children between four and 11 years old.

Places can be reserved via the Cartoon Academy website at www.thecartoonacademy.com

Prices are £10 per child and each workshop will run for around 1 hour 45 minutes.
