Cheshire Police to crackdown on alcohol misuse and spiked drinks

Nantwich Police say this year’s Nantwich Jazz Festival was staged successfully.

Just nine arrests were made during the festival which attracted around 20,000 people to the town.

Two men aged 24, one aged 21, and one aged 32 were arrested for being drunk and disorderly on the Sunday.

A 22-year-old local woman was arrested for drink driving.

Three arrests were made for assault – men aged 29, 17 and 24.

And a 20-year-old woman was arrested for racially-aggravated public order offences.

Police say they had planned for the festival months in advance with input and collaboration with event organisers, licensees, and specialist policing units.

Chief Inspector Paul Carroll, who oversaw the policing operation, said: “It was supported by the local Nantwich licensees, and town centre CCTV.

“This meant our ability to communicate and intercept potentially volatile situations before they escalated into more serious incidents was improved.

“Also this year, we had the added advantage of the use of Dispersal Notices – anyone found behaving in a volatile, aggressive or antisocial manner was issued a notice directing them to leave the town for a minimum of 24 hours or face arrest.

“Six Dispersal Notices were handed out – and happily those individuals warned took heed and left the Nantwich area.”

insp-dave-smithersHead of Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit Inspector Dave Smithers (pictured) added: “My officers and PCSOs, supported by staff from across Cheshire, offered a highly visible policing presence around the town centre pubs and bars over the course of the weekend.

“We provided a deterrent to any would-be troublemakers, and police were on hand to deal swiftly with any emerging pockets of disorder that arose.

“Happily, the event passed without serious incident, and with a great deal of support from the local community.

“The purpose of the police presence at JazzFest is to ensure festival goers enjoy the festival while simultaneously ensuring the local community can continue to go about their daily lives unhindered with the arrival of thousands of visitors to our town.

“The impact of this significant increase in visitors is managed by providing a visible and proportionate local policing presence, particularly to deal with the increase in alcohol-related incidents and traffic issues brought about by the festival and the warmer & sunnier weather we enjoyed this weekend.”

Haha, a success after nine arrests?!! Then conversely after no arrests would it still be seen as a success?!!
