Nantwich Town FC appoints a new managerial team - Danny Griggs

Nantwich Town player-coach Danny Griggs said the team was “gutted” by the last-gasp defeat at Blyth Spartans.

And now the Dabbers have to pick themselves up for the visit of Whitby Town to the Weaver Stadium tonight (April 14).

Nantwich are still not mathematically safe from relegation in the Evo-Stik Premier League, the defeat at Blyth leaving them four points above the bottom four with three games left.

But Griggs was full or praise for the players in the Blyth defeat.

“They were tremendous, they worked their socks off all of them.

“We would have been happy going away with a point to be honest.

“I think it’s cruel on the lads… we go again on Tuesday.

“First half was a great performance and we had a few chances to go ahead again.

“But they got their goal and then sneak one at the end, which we didn’t deserve to be honest.”

Goalkeeper Terry Smith and Jon Moran, who was playing right back, were singled out for praise.

“Terry has pulled off two great saves and he can’t do nothing about the penalty,” Griggs added.

“He has been top draw again, he has been for the last couple of games and keeps getting better and better.

“Yeah, Jon gave the penalty away. But that’s all he has done wrong.

“Other then that, he has had a steady game there considering he is a centre half.”

Saturday’s trip to Blyth marked the 11th game since Phil Parkinson, Neil Sorvel and Griggs took the reins of the Dabbers.

And Griggs says the players are still taking on board what they are told under the new regime.

“Everyone in training has been superb.
They put all the effort in, you could see it in the performance.

“We got it down and played some good stuff at times.

“Some of the chances, if we had taken them we could have won it two and three.

“But that is football – you don’t always get what you deserve out of the game.”
