Jon Gold hands over to Tony Davison as Nantwich Town chairman

Nantwich Town outgoing chairman Jon Gold says it was a tough decision to step down from the role, writes Richard Scott.

Gold has been at the helm for the past seven years and has enjoyed highlights like seeing the club reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 2011.

But now Gold has handed over the reins to Tony Davison.

Gold said: “It breaks my heart because I am Nantwich Town through and through.

It was constructive decision.

“I love the club and I will still be heavily involved.

“But the chairman’s role is a very time consuming one because we are basically asked to run a full time business on a voluntary and part time bases.

“As with the previous chairman Clive [Jackson], who was my predecessor and did a wonderful job, the problem for him was you have to balance that between your family life and your business life.

“We run our own business as well, it’s difficult. So after seven years my business is expanding and moving away.

“I don’t have the time to devote to this what it needs on a daily basis to run the nuts and the bolts.

“Tony Davison, who is coming in is a retired guy, has got more time than me and he can be here on a daily basis to ensure the mechanics of the business remain in place.”

Gold will still be involved with the club in the position of football operations director.

“I will always be the personality of the club.

“I will want to motivate people, create awareness, give sponsors support and people out there in the wider world, and Phil Parkinson was my appointment it was something I had a long vision.

“The time has come when I want to work closer with Phil and the team, with Neil and Danny, to develop and support them, as I’ve always done as chairman, and to the youth team to help develop and to Steve Smithies and the magnificent job he does.

“So reports of my demise are exaggerated, I will still be here!”

Gold says he will also be working with the commercial partners of the Weaver Stadium outfit.

“The commercial partners have been so loyal and so committed, I want to give them something back,” he added.

Phil Parkinson was appointed first team manager by Gold in February, and he is delighted with how he has done.

“We know from his playing days at the club, I mean this with no disrespect, he over-achieved and the team over-achieved we won two promotions – nearly a third.

“We won the Cheshire Senior Cup and in 2006 the ultimate for a non-league side for our level at that stage, the FA Vase.

“Phil has always had those qualities, he has shown that and developed, and he is Nantwich through and through.

“To be honest, the club lost its soul and Phil has put that back, the heartbeat of Nantwich Town and the community is back.

“The kids coming to the games and wanting to be part of Nantwich Town is back, the supporters who maybe disengaged with Nantwich Town are back, because there is a great feeling and I think there are exciting times ahead.”
