Two Nantwich butchers have proved a cut above the rest in the 2015 Butchers Q Guild Smithfield Awards.

H Clewlow Butchers, the 2015 Q Guild BBQ Competition supreme champion, scooped a Smithfield gold awards hat-trick.

The Pepper Street shop was honoured for its Chicken Lemon & Ginger Sausage, 2 Rib Roast, and its Party Platter for 4 People – a kitchen-ready product.

The Chicken Lemon & Ginger Sausage is a new product to be launched for 2016.

“It’s a total change to our vast range of flavours available,” said Charles Clewlow.

“The judges remarked that ‘the balance of flavours was spot on.”

The shop introduced its own 2 Rib roast last year, using continental-cross home-reared beef from Clappgates Farm in Haslington.

And the mixed meat party platter is new for Christmas 2015.

Meanwhile, Walter Smith Fine Foods, based at Bridgemere Nursery & Garden World, near Nantwich, claimed four gold awards.

It was honoured for its Free Range Pork with Nantwich Blue Cheese & Chive Sausages, Hereford Rump Steak & Cheshire Potato Pie, 21 Day Dry Aged Staffordshire Leg of Lamb, and Smoked Chicken Breast with Fresh Herbs.

The Smithfield Awards, the 29th year they have been staged, were open to all 110 Q Guild members UK-wide.

This year it attracted a record entry of 472 individual products across nine categories from 56 Q butchers.

All were judged by independent panels of food and meat industry experts.

Trophies and certificates were presented by Monica Galetti, one of the best-known female chefs in London.

Q Guild national chairman Mark Turnbull said: “The Smithfield Awards remain one of the most demanding and stringent product evaluation tests in the land and the esteem in which they are held is clearly demonstrated by the fact that this year has seen record entries from a record number of businesses.”
