shaw Lane defeat - Phil Parkinson, Nantwich Town manager

Nantwich Town boss Phil Parkinson has hailed the new formation which helped the Dabbers beat a Wigan Athletic development squad 3-1.

The system was trialled during the team’s 6-1 win at Newcastle Town at the weekend.

And Parkinson’s decision to give it another run out last night (August 2) against Wigan’s youngsters.

Goals from Ryan Jackson, Theo Stair and Sean Cooke earned Nantwich the win at the Weaver Stadium.

Parkinson said: “It was a really interesting game from our view point.

“We played a new system again, but I’m a firm believer players make systems, not the other way round.

“So they adapted really well, moving forward from the Newcastle game.”

Parkinson was also pleased with how they coped against a full-time Wigan squad.

“Against a really lively and talented development squad, it was something to really have a look with regards to how our players could cope with full time players after we’d have a successful game against Newcastle.

“Could we compete with full time players and we did. We looked stronger in the end.

“We used a couple of different systems last year.

“We did at times go with 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 last season and it really benefited us at times without really working on it.

“So it’s nice to see we’ve played those formations in the last two games and the lads have taken on board the information we’ve given them and they’ve adapted, which is really important.”

He was pleased for striker Theo Stair, who got off the mark for the Dabbers with a goal in the second half.

“I was probably as happy as Theo was!

“I brought him to the club to score goals and I know what a good finisher he is.

“Our link up play with Theo in the team is outstanding. I think he’ll be a big fans’ favourite here.”

Nantwich Town are next in action this Saturday August 6 away at Kidsgrove in a pre-season friendly.
