Richmond Village Nantwich has won a “Best of British” competition.

The care home village, off London Road, beat other Richmond Villages around the UK to the accolade.

Staff and residents designed Maypoles and phone boxes, and hung planes from trees.

They also dressed up and sang, sat in the stocks for a wet sponge contest, and arranged for a vintage London red bus to visit.

Staff also dressed up as famous British characters, including Winston Churchill (John Mercandelli, head of maintenance) and the Queen (Lynne Griffin, Village manager).

Susie Oakley, operations director of Richmond Villages and Judge, said: “Nantwich not only had a very busy schedule of activities, but managed to organise a vintage London Red Bus which the residents enjoyed looking at and sitting in.

“Most of the staff dressed up for the day and a number did a short rendition of war-time songs for the residents which were overseen by Winston Churchill himself!

“The floral displays in the grounds were plentiful and very striking.

“The Best of British lunch was beautifully presented and very much in keeping with the theme.

“There were a number of activities to complement the theme with residents and staff getting involved.”

Lynne Griffin, village manager, added: “We are immensely proud of winning as the preparations took a long time with everybody involved in one way or another.

“Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves – even the people it the stocks.

“We all agree Richmond Village Nantwich really is “The Best of British!”
