Crewe & Nantwich 1sts bounced back from defeat with a hard earned victory over third placed Spartans.

The visitors opened the stronger but Crewe gradually came into the game with backs and forwards linking well.

A series of drives led to veteran lock Phylis Allcock crashing over for the opening try converted by fly half Jim Creighton (pictured) for 7-0.

Crewe had the edge at this point, keeping the visitors on the back foot creating chances but lacking the final pass.

However, a good scrum in the Spartans 22 gave scrum half George Colebourne the space to break.

He was stopped just short of the line but able to pop the ball to centre Tom McGuire supporting well who went over for Crewe’s second try again converted by Creighton 14-0.

Spartans opened their account with a penalty from their fly half, 14-3 which was soon cancelled out by a penalty from Creighton for 17-3.

Spartans then turned over a scrum in the Crewe 22, giving their big no.8 the chance to barge over for a good try again converted which made the half time score 17-10.

Spartans came out firing after the break, turning the ball over in the loose three times in the first few minutes.

This coupled with a strong lineout put Crewe on the back foot.

However, Crewe’s defence stood firm giving the visitors few real chances to threaten the home line.

As the half progressed, Crewe came more into the game and a penalty gave Creighton a chance to seal the game, with a final score 20-10.

A much improved performance from last week’s disappointing loss to close neighbours Newcastle.

Now the Vagrants side look forward to next weekend’s Midlands Cup third round tie away to Kidderminster.

Meanwhile, the 2nds suffered a crushing defeat against Liverpool St Helens, going down 106-0.

But the 3rds continued their good form, beating Northwich 36-14.

The Junior colts also won 19-17 in a tight contest against Caldy.
