Crewe & Nantwich RUFC Under 16s produced an epic display to defeat rivals Sandbach and reach the Cheshire Bowl final.

Crewe emerged victors by 10-7 in their semi final with the final set to be played at the Vagrants in May.

They took the lead with a penalty kick in the first half, and it remained 3-0 until midway through the second period.

That’s when Sandbach exerted some pressure and took advantage of a rare missed tackle to power over for a try, which was converted for a 7-3 lead.

But Crewe hit back brilliantly within minutes from a well won line-out five metres out.

They broke blind from a driving maul to touch down in the corner, which was expertly converted from the touchline to make it 10-7 to Crewe.

And they defended stoutly in the final minutes to snuff out any Sandbach hopes of victory.

Under 16s coach Dan Lynch said: “From the off we stuck to the game plan, and although the Sandbach defence held firm, we made inches at first, then feet and eventually metres with masses of effort from every single player.

“They covered when Sandbach made breaks, chased when stretched in defence, they worked for each other, picked people up off the floor and gave every single ounce of energy they had.”

Meanwhile, Crewe & Nantwich Under 14s produced a fine away performance to beat Longton 53-12.

They surged into a 27-7 half-time lead through tries from Kyle Smith and Zak Pedersen and never looked back.
