cost of democracy - Council Tax hike - chief executive appointed

The Crewe West by-elections scheduled for April 23 have been postponed amid the current Coronavirus pandemic.

Cheshire East Council said the decision was made on advice from Government.

The by-election was called after the deaths of long-serving councillor Brian Roberts.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: “Following inquiries from some councils, we have just been informed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government that their intention is that elections and by-elections be postponed – including where notice of election has been posted.

“This will take effect once legislation has received Royal Assent.

“We are seeking further guidance as to when this is likely to be and will provide further information when we can.”

Covid-19 had already had a major impact on planned local elections across England this May.

Cheshire East Council’s acting chief executive Frank Jordan said: “As you will no doubt be aware, due to concerns around coronavirus, all local, mayoral and Police and Crime Commissioner elections, due across England this May, have been postponed for a year.”
