Nantwich town square - Captain Tom painting - Mon 27-4-2020 (2) (1)

Dear Editor,

I saw the fabulous ‘Captain Tom’ painting on slate by talented artist Tony Denton on display at Nantwich town square by the War Memorial for the first-time today.
The painting was reinstated to its original location following pressure from your readership.
99-year-old war veteran Captain Tom Moore has raised over £29 million for the NHS by walking around his garden 100 times using a walking frame and has even got to number one in the charts with a charity song. He turns 100 this Thursday 30th April.
Whilst on the town square and viewed and enjoyed by people shopping or exercising during the Coronavirus crisis, I became concerned that the painting could be stolen or damaged.
Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge kindly offered to put the painting on display in their shop window.
So I contacted the artist Tony Denton to request if his Captain Tom painting could be moved to the shop window at the Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge (located on the town square).
I’m delighted to say I had a reply from Tony signifying his approval.
Therefore, the painting was moved this morning (Tuesday April 28) to the shop window at the Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge.
I am pleased that the painting can be continued to be viewed and enjoyed by people shopping or exercising during the Coronavirus crisis.

Yours
Jonathan White, Wistaston

  1. Cynical Sid says:

Whilst Captain Tom has done magnificently, would displaying the portrait be encouraging people to come and see it – we are supposed to be in LOCKDOWN. Stay at home, stay safe and save lives.

Display the portrait by all means when we can venture out, but for the time being let’s not encourage or give people a lame excuse to go out.

Not quite sure why a resident from Wistaston would be in Nantwich Town square this morning, unless your trip was essential?

Let’s not get complacent folks, we ALL need to continue to abide by the lockdown rules, we have got this far, and need to ride it out before letting our guard down.

Stay safe, stay home and save lives.

  2. But it wasn’t there this morning. Has the Council put it somewhere safe, or has someone else taken it?
