A Stapeley school is making sure its lockdown pupils are not sitting idle – by organising a “garden” fun run or walk to celebrate national heroes!

Pear Tree Primary normally stages its fund-raising “Pound the Park” event when its young pupils run around Barony in Nantwich.

But with the current closure and lockdown, staff decided to arrange a May 4 “Star Wars Day” event that pupils could complete in their own gardens and raise funds for NHS Charities.

Headteacher Boo Edleston said: “We already had plans for both our fourth Pear Tree Pounds the Park and for a separate Star Wars Day celebration of our heroes.

“When we moved into lockdown and so may national heroes emerged we decided to merge the two events and raise money for the NHS through the NHS Charities Together fund.”

Lucy Newman, PE coordinator at Pear Tree, added: “We love our family sports events and are very fortunate to have superb support from our parents so we didn’t want to cancel our event.

“This time has seen many families engage more in daily exercise and here at school we utilise lots of daily programmes to support the children of Key Workers who we are with us to develop their stamina and general fitness.

“It seems a natural next step then to follow the inspiration of Captain Tom Moore and complete our 5km or 2.5km run or walk around our gardens.”

Participants are completing the event during May 4 and are being encouraged to wear a hero mask or full costume if they wish to celebrate the national heroes like Captain Tom.

Mrs Edleston added: “If ever the NHS needs the force to be with them, it’s right now.

“So I hope all our staff, parents and pupils will join in.

“It would be fantastic if many other members of our town came out that day and joined in the fun for such an excellent cause so I encourage everyone to spread the word.”
