Residents were evacuated after an explosion close to a school in Crewe.

The blast happened on School Crescent, near Hungerford Primary.

Four fire engines, two from Crewe, one from Nantwich and one from Alsager, are at the scene.

The explosion happened at a flat on School Crescent.

Nearby residents have been evacuated and took shelter in the nearby primary school.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently using two hose reel jets and a covering jet to extinguish the fire.

A large fan is being used to ventilate the area.

The gas supply to the property has been isolated.

A cordon is currently in place and people are advised to avoid the area.

A statement from Hungerford Primary on Facebook said as its Covid safety measures were “compromised” to shelter evacuated residents, it will be closed tomorrow for years 4-6 until 1pm.
