Ian Johnston - Hope House cycle ride

A Nantwich man has saddled up to pedal on an epic fundraising challenge.

Ian Johnston set off last weekend to cycle more than 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The 62-year-old operations director is raising money for his adopted charity, Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospices, which has bases in Oswestry and Conwy.

The hospices support more than 750 local children and families living with a life-threatening condition to live their best lives by delivering professional care, respite and counselling free of charge from the point of diagnosis.

Ian said: “A family friend of mine has had support from the hospices and I wanted to raise some money to support a great local charity.

“I have done a number of events over the years like triathlons, so when I heard of this challenge to ride the length of the country, I added it to my bucket list and very quickly entered it.”

Days in the saddle will range from 60 to 87 miles and cover 55,000ft of elevation gain which will certainly test the legs.

The group event takes place over 14 days and Ian hopes to arrive in John O’Groats on May 31.

He added: “All being well, we’ll arrive at John O Groats on Saturday 31st but day eight of Carnforth to Gretna will be the most challenging.

“I’m very much looking forward to the adventure and meeting like-minded fundraising cyclists also taking on the challenge.”
