A body found in the canal near Nantwich is believed to be that of a man from Hankelow area, police have said.

The discovery was made near Bridge 80 on the Shropshire Union Canal close to Overwater Marina on Saturday (May 24).

The canal and towpath were cordoned off for several hours as a recovery was made.

Cheshire Police say it’s believed the body is of a 69-year-old man from the nearby Hankelow area.

A police spokesperson told Nantwich News: “At around 8.27am on Saturday 24 May, police were called to reports that a body had been found near to the Overwater Marina.

“Local officers, later joined by colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service, conducted a search of the area and were flagged down by the caller who had found the body of a man in the canal and had, sadly, died.

“The body is believed to be that of a 69-year-old man of the Hankelow area and his next of kin have been made aware.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a case file will be prepared for the coroner.”
