Nantwich has a new mayor in town – and he’s on a mission to be ‘bear-y good’ at his job!
Say hello to “Teddy Mayor” who will be out and about with his owner Cllr Mary Slinn helping to raise the profile of businesses, charities and organisations in the town.
Mary, who took over as the real Nantwich Town Council Mayor in May, has introduced her furry side kick to raise a smile and get everyone talking about the good things going on in town.
What’s more, Teddy Mayor has his own Facebook group ‘Teddy Mayor of Nantwich’ where local people can keep up to date on his travels.
Teddy Mayor will also go into schools with Mary as she encourages children to learn more about local democracy and take an interest in politics from a young age.
She said: “Teddy Mayor is a fun way to support the places and people I visit. He’s had a special little robe and chain made for him and looks quite the part.
“I want to be the kind of Mayor that gets out to meet people and Teddy Mayor is a way of making the role more engaging.
“I really do hope it encourages our younger residents to take an interest in the role of a Mayor and their duties.
“Certainly he attracted attention when I crossed the town square after picking him up!”
Teddy Mayor had his first official engagement attending a Teddy Bear’s picnic at Brookfield Park today (Tuesday July 1).
The event was organised by Sustainable Nantwich and Nantwich Town Council to give families a chance to see plans for a new “Natural Play Area” in the park.
It marks the next phase in the transformation of Brookfield Park, creating a new play area featuring natural wooden equipment, which will link between the existing formal play space and the surrounding wildflower meadows.
Next spring, Teddy Mayor will be raffled to boost funds for the Mayor’s chosen causes, The Dog’s Trust and The Thursday Club at St Mary’s Parish Hall.
Look out for a visit from Mary the Mayor and Teddy Mayor over coming months.
