Weaver Primary in Nantwich is bringing back its fundraising “Race for Life” with a marathon on the school field, writes Jonathan White.
There’s a buzz of excitement in the air at the school as staff, pupils, and families gear up for the return of their much-loved fundraiser on July 21 in support of Cancer Research UK.
The event was first launched in 2014, when pupils raced around the playground and playing fields in colourful costumes – tutus, wigs, legwarmers, and all – raising more than £5,000.
Now the school community is again lacing up its running shoes with the aim of raising a similar amount.
Event organiser and Weaver teacher Claire Morgan said: “After raising so much money back in 2014, I wanted to bring it back to see if we can do it again.
“This event is not just about running. It’s also about showing strength, determination and hope.
“Every step our children take is a step toward a future free from cancer.”

And as part of the event, endurance runner Paul Dean, 44, a teaching assistant at Weaver Primary, is taking on a full marathon – 26.2 miles around the school running track – all in one day.
Paul is no stranger to epic challenges.
He’s run 10 marathons in 10 days, travelling from Skegness to Llandudno, and has completed four marathons in 24 hours during a brutal backyard ultra, looping through Crewe and Nantwich.
He said: “It’s going to be tough, but it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by those battling cancer every day.
“If I can help even a little by running around the track for a few hours, I’m all in.”
