Crewe CC 2 - Lew Bacon

Crewe Vagrants CC men’s teams enjoyed strong victories which sees them top their respective leagues.

The 1sts had a comfortable five-wicket win at home to Newcastle and Harthill.

Top bowling spells by Ollie Jarvis (4-30) and younger brother Ben (4-21) reduced the visitors to just 91 all out.

With little support only Jacob Maddock (27) showed any Newcastle resistance.

Crewe’s reply was not as straightforward as expected.

Newcastle bowlers Jack Wilson (1-7) and Zak Twist (2-21) took full advantage of the drying wicket and beat the bat regularly.

At 21–3, Nathan Twiddell (17) and Sam Youds (19) settled and the hosts reached 59–5.

Lew Bacon (21NO) joined Ben Jarvis (18NO) and both sensibly picked the bad balls, reaching the target.

The 2nd team enjoyed a thumping win away to Audley.

Crewe’s bowling attack never let the home batters settle.

Only Chas Berkin (13) and Clint Thankachan (18) achieved double figures as Haveesh Alluri (3–11), Harry Wynne-Hughes (3–21) and Frazier Hoye (2–5) ran through the batting.

Audley were 60 all out in just 20 overs.

Matthew Whittingham’s opening 28 put Crewe on course and with support from Hamish Howard (12), Harry Wynne-Hughes (9NO) and a quickfire 12 from Piers Stockton earned victory in just 14 overs.

Crewe Ladies lost out to Alsager in their contest.

Alsager batted well but Crewe took wickets through Claire Standley and Jess Kimberley.

The final wicket was a run out from Ailsa Meakin combining with Kimberley.

Alsager’s target of net 96 looked achievable as the Crewe batters progressed and Kimberley was again in the action, top scoring with net 22.

Standley also made double figures. With four overs to go and in spite of losing three wickets, Crewe were just ahead of the par score and needed 20 to win.

The 14th over was crucial though with a couple of catches taken cleanly which upped the pressure and the required run rate.

In an attempt to hit big, three more wickets fell and Crewe lost by 16 runs.
