Crewe CC Ladies team

Crewe Vagrants CC Men’s 1sts earned a winning draw away at Elworth, but the 2nds were beaten and the Ladies won a crunch clash at Aston.

Aston batted first but Crewe struck early with Rosie Meakin catching off Claire Standley’s bowling.

The hosts built well and were on net 48 after eight overs with some strong batters to come.

However, Crewe made several more breakthroughs with Meakin the stand out with four wickets for 10 runs, two bowled and two caught by Nicki Jarvis at WK and Lisa Taylor.

Taylor also bowled one and another catch was taken by Jarvis behind the stumps off Jess Kimberley’s bowling.

Seven wickets meant Aston finished on net 58.

In reply, with four overs to go, Crewe were just ahead but two wickets in over 13 changed that.

It wasn’t until two balls to go in the final over that sufficient gap was built to take Crewe out of danger with Taylor top scoring (18) and guiding Crewe to a win by 21 runs.

The Men’s 1st team lost both openers cheaply at Elworth.

But Ollie Jarvis was joined by top Crewe batter Lew Bacon (40) and together recovered to pass the 100 mark.

Jarvis top scored with 75. Later batters helped build a large total finishing on 251 for 9 with scores from Sam Youds (35), Ben Jarvis (24) and Ryan Briddon(28).

Crewe’s bowling was without it’s usual penetration.

Although always behind the run rate, Elworth top scorer Sam Baldwin (78) in two partnerships with James Holt (37) and Tom Seabridge (16) was the main barrier to a Crewe win.

Rory Kalnkins topped Crewe’s bowling with 2 – 25 and one each for Ollie Jarvis, Cal Bacon, Ben Jarvis, Faisal Mahmood and Lew Bacon.

The fast over-rate gave Crewe an extra seven overs but not enough as the home side finished on 173 for 8.

Crewe’s winning draw was rewarded with 14 points.

The Men’s 2nds were without captain Max Gay but stand-in Mike Whittingham won the toss and decided to take the field against Hem Heath.

M Rahim (49) and F Ul Islam (15) gave the visitors a reasonable 51-run start on a good wicket.

Runs continued to flow from the later order despite tight bowling from Frazier Hoye (2-14 off 8 overs).

Other wicket takers were Mike Whittingham (3-39), Harry Wynne-Hughes (2-29) and Piers Stockton (1-19), but Hem Heath’s final total of 189 for 9 was always going to be a difficult chase.

Crewe lost three early batters but fortunately the old head of Richard Jarvis (46) with good support from Frazier Hoye (32) took the score to a more respectable 78 for 4.

But after they were out, only young Matt Whittingham (10) and Hamish Howard (13NO) managed double figures and were all out 58 runs short.
