A man who was caught on CCTV punching another man and fracturing his skull in Nantwich town centre has been jailed.
Caine Mellor, 27, left his victim unconscious after an altercation, punching him to the ground where he suffered brain trauma.
Mellor, of Smith Grove, Crewe, ran away from the scene but was identified months later from the CCTV by a member of the public following a media appeal.
Mellor pleaded guilty to one count of grievous bodily harm without intent. He appeared at Chester Crown Court on September 15 where he was sentenced to 28 months in prison.
The incident happened at around 1.30am on Sunday June 9 2024.
The victim, a 33-year-old man from Oldham, was walking through the town centre with his partner when the altercation with Mellor took place.
The victim was taken to hospital where it was discovered that he had sustained significant fractures to his skull.
It was also revealed that he had sustained brain trauma, requiring emergency surgery.
During questioning, Mellor answered no comments to all questions, appearing to show no remorse.
However, at court he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm without intent.
Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Ryan Ogden, said: “I welcome the custodial sentence handed to Mellor and I hope that it acts as a warning to others.
“What may seem like a single punch can have many undesired consequences – what occurred that evening could have resulted in a fatal injury being sustained.
“The victim in this case sustained serious injuries as a result of his ordeal and while he will never be able to forget what happened to him, I hope that this sentence will provide him with some reassurance.”
In response to Mp……The Violent Thug in question will probably be out on the streets again after serving half his ‘Sentence’ in a soft environment with Widescreen TV, Mobile Phone, Pool Table to play on and a platoon of Do-Gooders helping him to ‘Re-habilitate’ Ha! etc etc.
Our Judicial System is just so broken, toothless and inadequate these days is quite sickening? – The hullabaloo calling for more prisons to be built is laughable since hardened criminals are queuing up to fill the existing slammers simply because they’re so cushy, offer no deterrent whatsoever!
