Nantwich Town Under 18s were narrowly beaten on the road at Stourbridge in the FA Youth Cup.
The Dabbers were hoping to replicate their fine cup victory over Lichfield City.
Stourbridge had thrashed Coton Green 8-0 in the previous round so Nantwich knew it was going to be a stern test at the War Memorial Athletic Ground.
The hosts took the lead against the run of play on 30 minutes when a deep free kick was mishit into the far corner of the net.
Nantwich created chances to level before the break but it remained 1-1 at half-time.
The Dabbers suffered a bog blow just two minutes after the break when a low shot by Haliday went through keeper Melling.
Stourbridge then hit the post, before Nantwich pulled a goal back when Freddie Shawcross, son of former England and Stoke City star Ryan, scored.

Shawcross had a chance to level on 57 minutes but his shot was straight at the keeper.
The hosts then restored their two-goal lead in the 70th minute when a low free kick on the edge of the box found the back of the net.
The Dabbers huffed and puffed and were rewarded in injury time with a second goal to make it 3-2.
