Sound Common plaque unveiling - Romany families

A plaque commemorating British Romanichal Heritage has been unveiled at Sound Common in Nantwich.

It marks recognition and remembrance in honour of British Romanichal families who once called the site home before being forcibly removed decades ago.

And it was part of a landmark day celebrating the resilience, culture, and heritage of the Romanichal community through The Atchin Tan Heritage Project – a film premiere and immersive exhibition hosted by Pride of Romany.

The event, supported by Cheshire East Council and Historic England, shone a light on the stories of Romany families who lived on Sound Common for generations before their forced removal in the 1960s.

The plaque was unveiled in a moving ceremony led by community elders, Historic England representatives, the mayor of Cheshire East, and local councillors, stands as a permanent tribute to their legacy.

Charmaine Abdul Karim, founder of Pride of Romany, said: “This project is a labour of love — it honours the memory of our ancestors and their resilience in the face of eradication and assimilation attempts.

“Romany families lived on Sound Common for multi generations, and their stories deserve to be told with dignity and respect.”

Cllr Michael Gorman, deputy Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “This plaque is more than a marker – it’s a symbol of truth, dignity, and long-overdue recognition.

“The Romanichal community has contributed richly to the cultural fabric of Cheshire, and we honour their stories, their struggles, and their strength.

“We are proud to stand alongside Pride of Romany in ensuring this heritage is never forgotten.”

The celebrations continued with a formal black-tie event at Nantwich Civic Hall, bringing together community leaders, artists, advocates, and supporters for the premiere of The Atchin Tan Heritage Project film and exhibition.
