Pilain Type 4P Targa Sport leaves Wybunbury Tower to start their scenic tour (1)

A spectacular ‘Cheshire Cheese Rally’ featuring veteran cars (pre-1919) brought motoring history to life in the village of Wybunbury, writes Jonathan White.

A total of 28 vehicles took part, with participants gathering at The Swan Inn and Wybunbury Tower before setting off on a 40-mile scenic tour through the Cheshire countryside.

The route included a visit to Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker, near Nantwich, where the cars were displayed, and a stop for a well-earned lunch at The Bhurtpore Inn in Aston, before returning to Wybunbury.

The event was organised by George Hudson of The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain (North West Section) with the aim of encouraging a new generation of enthusiasts to experience the joy of owning and driving these timeless machines.

Young participants – affectionately known as Junior Mechanics – each received a gift bag as a special memento of the day.

Among vehicles taking part were a 1910 Austin Endcliffe Tourer, 1904 Cadillac Model A Rear Entrance Tonneau, 1903 Clement Rear Entrance Tonneau, 1900 Darracq Voiturette, 1914 Darracq Torpedo, 1903 De Dion-Bouton, Delage Tourer, Dodge Brothers Touring, Ford Model T, 1904 Franklin Type E Runabout, 1904 Humberette, Mors Tourer, Peugeot Type 67, 1911 Pilain Type 4P Targa Sport, Renault Type AX, 1914 Rover Tourer, and a Stutz Bearcat – with one dedicated owner even driving his car all the way from Pembrokeshire to take part.

Visitors also had the chance to climb Wybunbury Tower in support of the Wybunbury Tower Preservation Trust.

The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain is a prestigious motoring organisation dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of motor vehicles built before 1919 – the glorious “veteran” and early “Edwardian” eras of motoring.

The day’s action was captured by Harley, who runs the popular ‘CarTraction’ YouTube channel.

Harley filmed the cars arriving in Wybunbury, the displays, and even took a thrilling ride in one of the vehicles to capture the journey from a passenger’s perspective.

The rally took place in pleasant autumnal weather, with golden leaves beginning to carpet the ground – the perfect backdrop for a celebration of classic motoring heritage.
