A Wistaston woman has raised £865 for Cancer Research UK after completing a month-long walking challenge in September – smashing her original fundraising goal, writes Jonathan White.
Anne Garner, who works as a Learning Mentor at Cheshire College – South & West in Crewe, took part in the national “Walk 30 Miles Challenge”.
It’s a flexible virtual fundraiser encouraging participants to walk 30 miles throughout the month in support of the charity’s life-saving research into cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
For Anne, the challenge was a personal milestone as well as a charitable one. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, she is now thankfully cancer-free.
She set herself a realistic and steady goal – walking one mile a day for 30 days.
By the end of the challenge, she had walked a total of 33.53 miles.
Her initial fundraising target of £150 was reached in 24 hours, inspiring her to increase her goal to £500.
And she went on to smash that target, raising £865, including Gift Aid contributions.
Anne said: “I’m truly humbled by the kindness and generosity people have shown.
“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I promised myself I’d do what I could to help others facing the same battle.
“This challenge reminded me how much good we can do when we come together – every single donation, no matter how small, really does make a difference.
“Thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey.
“I wanted to do something realistic for me, and this challenge was perfect.
“It’s shown that you don’t have to run marathons or climb mountains to help an important cause – every step counts.”
