Users of Queens Park in Crewe were warned today after DEFRA confirmed cases of Avian Bird Flu.

The park is used by thousands of people across Crewe and Nantwich, but a number of birds including swans have died in recent days.

There are also fears and unconfirmed reports bird flu is impacting some animals at Nantwich Lake.

In a social media post by Friends of Queens Park, a volunteer group, they said: “We’ve just had confirmation via Cheshire East management from DEFRA that Avian Bird Flu is definitely at the Queens Park.

“So please everyone stop feeding the wildlife, keep dogs on leads, and follow what the signs say from Defra on the gates and posts around the lake.

“You may see some of the wildlife group feeding them as we are keeping a eye and reporting back what they see or find.”

The official DEFRA website does not officially list Queens Park or Nantwich Lake as confirmed bird fly controlled zones.

A DEFRA spokesperson said: “The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) carries out year-round surveillance of dead wild birds submitted via public reports and warden patrols as part of its wild bird surveillance programme.

“APHA publish a report (updated weekly) on findings of HPAI in wild birds in Great Britain and further information on reports of avian influenza in wild bird in Great Britain and across Europe are available via APHAs outbreak assessments.

“APHA have also launched a new interactive map of reported wild bird mortality and findings of avian influenza virus (bird flu) in wild birds and wild mammals and an interactive data dashboard of findings of avian influenza virus in wild birds.

“We are unable to comment on any testing or reports that are not listed at this site as the results will not yet be ready for publication.”
