Students from Malbank Sixth Form College in Nantwich have returned from an unforgettable four-day visit to Rome, describing the experience as a “10/10” highlight of their school journey.
The residential for students from Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, forms part of the school’s aim to widen horizons and develop cultural capital.
Building on last year’s visit to New York City, the Rome trip was designed to be more financially accessible while offering the same ambition and life-changing experiences.
In four packed days, students had a guided tour of the iconic Colosseum, explored the ruins of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, visited the breathtaking Pantheon, and spent time in Vatican City, including St Peter’s Square.
Evenings were spent enjoying authentic Italian cuisine and soaking up the atmosphere at landmarks such as the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, while students also experienced the vibrant shopping districts of Via del Corso and Monti.

Malbank staff said the real success of the trip was the growth seen in students.
Trip leader Craig Batty said: “We packed an enormous amount into four days, but what really stood out was how our students grew in confidence and independence as the visit progressed.
“They were punctual, respectful and enthusiastic throughout: they were a genuine credit to Malbank.”
Year 10 students were selected based on exemplary behaviour, attendance, and commitment to school life.
The visit also provided Year 11 and Sixth Form students a chance to strengthen friendships and build connections across year groups.
Student Phoebe praised staff for adapting plans quickly when faced with queues, ensuring no time was wasted.
Jess described the visit as “very organised” with “lovely sights and lovely staff” while Sam summed up the general feeling, adding “It was 10/10 — everything was amazing”.
A school spokesperson said: “While Malbank continues to expand its extra-curricular offer, experiences such as the Rome residential demonstrate the school’s commitment to providing opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom; building confidence, cultural awareness, and lifelong memories.”
