turkey farm fire

Fire crews are tackling a major blaze at a turkey farm next to Alvaston Hall in Nantwich.

Several appliances and crews are on the scene tackling the blaze on Peach Lane, off the A530 Middlewich Road.

One witness walking on King’s Shilling Walk, the route between Nantwich and Wistaston, said they could see “a large barn on fire and hear the cracking noise made by it presumably the wood of the structure burning”.

“There’s a rank smoke smell in the air. The smoke is crossing Middlewich Road onto fields,” they added.

Firemen were seen looking for water outlets on Middlewich Road,  attaching a length of hosepipe the length of the entrance of Alvaston Hall driveway.

In total, nine fire engines from Nantwich, Crewe, Middlewich, Alsager, Tarporley, Winsford, Chester and Sandyford in Staffordshire attended along with an aerial ladder platform and a ‘Scorpion’ high reach extendable turret.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters are at the scene of a fire involving a farm building in Peach Lane, Alvaston.

“The affected barn involves a turkey shed measuring approximately 60m by 25m and has been significantly damaged by fire.

“The fire has been surrounded, the crews are using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and main jets to fight the fire.

“Attendance at the scene has been reduced to seven fire engines. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire from the outside using hose reel jets and covering jets.

“The high reach extendable turret has been set up and is using its spike to pierce the roof space to provide high quantities of water for internal firefighting.

“Sadly, a number of turkeys have perished within the affected barn.”
