The company running a major turkey farm in Nantwich where 3,000 birds died in a fire said today they are operational again.

And Aviagen Turkeys, who run the farm near Alvaston Hall off Middlewich Road, also dismissed an idea by animal rights group PETA for a memorial to the dead birds.

A huge fire ripped through one of the four large turkey barns at the farm at Alvaston, run by Aviagen Turkeys, on April 19th.

The blaze killed thousands of birds and fire crews spent almost two days tackling the fire and investigating the circumstances.

The animal rights group sent a letter to Cheshire East Council asking for approval to erect a memorial at the scene.

They say they want to highlight that “everyone can help prevent animals from dying terrifying deaths by going vegan”.

But when asked if Aviagen Turkeys would support the memorial, a company spokesperson said today: “Aviagen Turkeys’ focus is on determining the cause of the fire and ensuring the smooth operations of its farm.

“The farm is operational again, our contingency plans were effective and we have been able to keep serving customers.

“We still don’t know the cause of the fire and investigations are ongoing.”

PETA Vice President Elisa Allen said: “Turkeys are clever individuals, but they’re also among the world’s most abused animals.

“A memorial would encourage people to reconsider eating the dead bodies of birds, and remind everyone that the best way to avoid tragedies like this fire is to go vegan, sparing animals from the horror of being bred and confined to dark sheds, which, one way or another, become their death traps.”

Fire crews were on the scene for nearly 36 hours dealing with the incident which involved a large 60m x 25m turkey barn.

At its height, nine fire appliances from across Cheshire and Staffordshire were on scene.

A few days after, Cheshire Fire Service said the “most probable cause was an electrical fault within the building, so it is being classed as accidental”.
