Ray Doyle captain Nantwich CC

Nantwich Cricket Club’s first team clicked into top gear at the weekend, moving level on points with Hyde at the top of the Cheshire County Premier League and advancing to the next round of the ECL National Club Championship.

Whitehouse Lane avoided the rain on Saturday but the contest against Timperley was over in double-quick time anyway.

The visitors were dismissed for only 89, with Ray Doyle (pictured) claiming 4-20 for Nantwich.

The hosts lost Ben Wright and Rob Jones early but an unbeaten 37 from Ali Chughtai helped see the Dabbers home with seven wickets and 32 overs to spare.

And the in-form Chughtai set the foundation for a winning run chase against Porthill Park CC in the National Club Championship at Whitehouse Lane on Sunday.

After the visitors – put into bat by Nantwich skipper Luke Robinson – had made 221-7 from their 40 overs, Chughtai led the response with a 55-ball 56.

And after Chughtai had gone, Robinson made sure no momentum was lost by hitting five sixes in a 52-ball 85.

Opener Ben Wright (67 not out) then steered Nantwich into the next round for the loss of only three wickets and with over a couple of overs to spare.

At Timperley on Saturday, there was a narrow defeat for the second team who only just failed to defend a total of 129.

Owen Silvester and Jakob Jordan top-scored for Nantwich with 24 apiece and it looked as though the visitors might pull off a surprise win when Noah Birchall claimed 5-47, but the home side got home by one wicket.

The Saturday third team fell to a more emphatic defeat at Hem Heath. Sarah Nettleton top-scored with 23 as the Dabbers struggled to 106 all out and the home team passed their target for the loss of only wicket.

But the Sunday third team recorded an excellent win at Hyde. Oliver Howell (73) and Callum Pearson (62) helped the Dabbers post a total of 168-4 from 40 overs after being put into bat.

That proved plenty as Karl Prince claimed 6-17 before Noah Birchall took three wickets in nine balls to complete a 105-run win for the Dabbers.

On Saturday, the Nantwich second team is at home, taking on Neston CC. The game starts at midday and all spectators are welcome.

The firsts travel to Neston. A date for the diary is Wednesday, May 20, when Nantwich Cricket Club hosts a T20 match between Cheshire and Derbyshire.

Admission will be free and the bar and catering facilities will be open.
